There is a place that you can go to view Matanuska Glacier that is right before you reach the state recreation area (when coming from the north). After you make the turn, you’ll probably say to yourself, “this can’t be right” about 15 times. It’s right. After taking a winding dirt road with a sheer cliff edge, you’ll find yourself at the welcome center. It’s $25 per person, but man oh man is it worth it.
Once you get back to the parking area, it’s about a 1/2 mile hike to the glacier’s face. You are then pretty much free to climb, hike, and explore at your own risk. We did hear the ice crack beneath our feet a few times and only freaked out a medium amount. There are tour options if you are worried about being responsible for your own safety, but we were willing to risk it. I’m not going to say that’s the smartest way to go about things, but it worked out OK for us. This time, anyway. Matanuska Glacier is a beauty that could be explored for hours. It’s a glacier that you can get up close and personal with… and even fill up your water bottle with some fresh water ‘straight from the source’.
